Theresa the way to ‘Goh’!

The role model to emulate

In a country yearning for sporting success, we more often than not idolize athletes from distant places hoping to emulate their success in one way or another, So much so that sometimes we do not realise we ‘paparazzi’ into various aspects of the chosen athlete we idolize.

This “short-sightedness” is a common myopia amongst athletes of today in the local scene. It also seems like a far-fetched dream at times. The most common name that rolls of the tongues of Singaporeans is probably Fandi Ahmad who was someone people aspired to be back in the day when he was in the peak of his career.

We have athletes who actually “walk the talk” and one of them is none other than para-athlete Theresa Goh! Someone who has been working hard quietly and probably idolizing no one, she has worked her way up to the top of the sporting hierarchy.

Theresa Goh dominated and led from start to finish in the Women's 100m Breaststroke SB4 race to come in first and clinch the gold medal for Singapore.

Clinching her 30th Gold Medal at the regional games yesterday, it was definitely an achievement not to be ignored. This particular podium finish summed up what exactly she is made for and she represents for the sporting community in Singapore. Despite being ill, she dominated in the Women’s 100m Breastroke SB4 to remind everyone that she is still the one to beat!

After all these years training one can only imagine the number of times she must have wanted to throw in the white towel. Safe to say she was definitely part of the evolution of the local para-sport scene. Back in the day when para-sports was almost non-existent, she persevered and pull through, very much like her 30th gold medal as not even the flu could stop her.

Out of the pool, Theresa also wants to make an impact in not only the local scene but the global scene as well. She is one of 11 candidates for the World Para Swimming Athlete Advisory Group and is definitely putting Singapore on the global sporting map.

For aspiring athletes who wish to emulate a sporting hero, they have to look no further because Theresa Goh is definitely a role model and a benchmark to meet. A home-grown talent not to be ignored and a name to be muttered decades ahead in the sporting scene!

Congratulations Theresa Goh on your success and for being the role model athlete Singapore has been yearning for!
