Old School Delights: A place for everybody

Seeing people with disabilities rising above their circumstances is something that gives Ms Olivia Teo, one of the founders of local restaurant Old School Delights, a lot of satisfaction.

And it is one of the main reasons why she came on board to collaborate for the Dis.Is.Able card. Old School Delights, which is located in the chic area along Upper Thomson Road, is providing a 50 percent discount on cakes and free kopi or teh with every purchase of a main course for holders of the Dis.Is.Able card. The Dis.Is.Able card is given out to all Singapore’s national para-athletes who are competing in the upcoming 2015 ASEAN Para Games in December. Before running Old School Delights, Ms Teo worked as a jobs placement officer for the people with disabilities and her experiences in the past meant that she holds a special place for the disabled community.

Ms Teo said her time as a jobs placement officer exposed her to the people with disabilities who at times were in heart-wrenching and dire conditions. “It was quite an emotional time, it can be quite depressing sometimes but at the same time when you see your candidates with disabilities doing well that is the most fulfilling thing,” said Ms Teo. “Because seeing them rise above their circumstances… They rise up and actually go on to have permanent jobs, it just makes me feel very inspired and very encouraged.”

Ms Teo said that Old School Delights, which serves home-made local favourites like Laksa, Nasi Lemak and Kueh Pie Ti, hopes that through collaborations with Dis.Is.Able, more people will be aware of the the disabled community in Singapore. She said she hopes that people “will see their abilities more than disabilities”. To the para-athletes flying the national flag this December she had a simple message: “Never ever quit, strive on.”
